Adherence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae to the human host respiratory epithelium is a prerequisite for colonization of the respiratory epithelium and subsequent induction of disease. P1 is one of the major surface adhesins of M. pneumoniae, which appear to be directly involved in receptor binding. This is an adhesin also known to be strongly immunogenic in humans and experimental animals infected with M. pneumoniae. P1 protein has been used as an antigen for the immunodiagnosis of M. pneumoniae infection.
