Vector-borne diseases

Vector-borne diseases are diseases caused by parasites, viruses and bacteria, transmitted between humans or from animals to humans, through a living organism. Many of these vectors are insects that ingest infected blood, subsequently transmitting it to another living being. These diseases are mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical areas, generally in the poorest areas, and many are already considered emerging infectious diseases in other parts of the world.

Vector-borne diseases represent more than 17% of all infectious diseases, cause more than 700 thousand deaths a year, and 80% of the world's population is at risk of suffering from one or more of them. They are diseases that are difficult to control and prevent. There are only vaccines available for some of them and most of the existing treatments for these diseases are not fully effective.
