Infectious diseases caused by Parasites
Parasites are microorganisms that live thanks to a host, generally causing damage. They are of various sizes, from microscopic single-celled organisms to multicellular organisms visible to the naked eye. When the balance between the parasite and the host is broken in favor of the former, the disease appears, and can cause from mild discomfort to death. Treatment is with antiparasitics, having to identify the type of parasite that causes the disease to determine the most appropriate medication. The diagnosis of parasitic diseases can be made by fecal examination, endoscopy/colonoscopy, by serological tests for detection of antibodies or antigens, by blood smear and microscope, by radiography/magnetic resonance imaging/computed axial tomography, or by molecular diagnosis.
